Braunstone Town Police Newsletter November 2018

Hello everyone. We hope that your autumn is proving to be safe and enjoyable. The darker evenings and colder weather are upon us and with that we would like to offer our seasonal crime prevention advice. Please make use of timer switches for some of the lights in your home and also consider if security/sensor lighting outside your house could be fitted or improved. New lights are mostly of the LED variety and cost only pennies to use per year due to their very low energy usage. We traditionally see some increases in calls about antisocial behaviour around bonfire night, partly due to the availability of fireworks. If you need to report problems to us, please phone us on 101 and the neighbourhood team will do their best to investigate the issue and deal with those identified as being responsible.

We have seen a slight fall in the number of reported thefts from cars since last month and we ask everyone to remain vigilant, remove valuables from cars and vans and to make sure vehicles are locked, with nothing left on display which may tempt a thief. We have been making extra late night patrols in the area to deter and detect offending. Please do report any suspicious activity and we will do our utmost to follow it up.

We would also like to offer a small reminder about fraud attempts. In short, the advice is that your bank will never contact you and ask for your PIN number, either by phone, text message or email. If you have any doubts, end the call and contact your bank’s customer services department. To do this use the number from the back of your bank card or on a bank statement as this will be the genuine number for your bank. If you believe you have been the victim of fraud or attempted fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Please pass on this message to help friends and family to avoid being the victim of a scam.

The forthcoming police beat surgeries are on 6th November 5.30pm – 6.30pm at Aldi, Thorpe Astley and on 22nd November 1.45pm – 4.00pm at the Civic Centre. If you want to come and have a chat about any concerns we would be delighted to see you.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter October 2018 halloween poster

Halloween is this month and traditionally its fairly busy for us, we enjoy seeing all the different outfits of the children as we’re patrolling. Leicestershire Police would encourage anyone planning on going out trick or treating to be mindful of local residents, in particular elderly residents and to respect their property and privacy. Leicestershire Police and partner agencies are ‘cracking’ down on anti-social behaviour over Halloween and Bonfire Night and are encouraging store owners not to sell flour and eggs to anyone under the age of 18 years old.

Despite highlighting our issues with insecure vehicles we have unfortunately suffered again this month with cars being entered and items stolen. Some vehicle owners continue to leave their vehicles insecure on the road or on their driveways. If you have any evidence which would lead to the identification of offenders, please contact us on the non-emergency number 101. If you see suspicious activity in your area or see a vehicle in which the occupants are taking an unusual interest in other vehicles please contact 101 immediately.

In the last 3 weeks we’ve managed to recover 3 stolen vehicles, a male and female have been arrested and enquiries are ongoing.

Members of your beat team will be at the Braunstone Civic Centre, Kingsway, Braunstone Town on October 17th at 10am – 11.30am, we would actively encourage you to come and see us and let us know of any concerns you may have. We spoke to a number of members of the public at our latest Beat Surgery at the Co-Op who highlighted a couple of issues in the area which we will be looking into.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter September 2018

In true British style I feel I should mention the amazing weather we have had! Glorious sunshine and on occasion unbearable heat but it’s been a pleasant change from previous years, unfortunately at the time of writing this it appears Autumn is slowly arriving.

Last month we appealed for information after an 18-year-old woman was grabbed by a man in an alleyway between Woodcote Road and Staplehurst Avenue which runs behind Millfield Primary School at around 3pm on the 5th August. The male was described as white with a tanned complexion, 5’6 light brown hair between 30 and 40 years old and was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts. Enquiries are still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 409 of 5th August.

Historically September has seen an increase in Theft from Motor Vehicles over the area of Braunstone Town. Over the past 3 years reports have spiked over this period so in an effort to combat this proactive measures will take place. I would also like to remind all car owners to always remove valuables and loose change from your vehicle, don’t leave tools in your vehicle overnight, please double check your vehicle is locked and windows are closed and never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running.

As part of the network of European traffic police forces (TISPOL), we held a speed awareness operation where members of the beat team along with some Police Specials were out in Thorpe Astley with the SL700 speed gun, over 200 vehicles were monitored with the majority driving safely and within the speed limit. Advisory letters and tickets were issued with the fastest vehicle recorded at 53mph in a 30mph zone.

We held a Beat Surgery last month at Gilly’s Café in Braunstone Town and again at the Community Centre in Thorpe Astley, only a handful of issues were raised but these were about other areas in the County.

Officers will be holding a Street Surgery on Wednesday the 19th September 2018 at 0930 hours, this will be held at the Co-Op on Turnbull Drive, Braunstone Town. We will also be out and about in our Beat Bus on 4th September 2018 1930-2130 at the shopping parade on Henley Crescent, Braunstone Town and again on the 21st September 2018 1430-1630 on St Marys Avenue, Braunstone Town. Please drop by to discuss local policing issues affecting you. For the latest crime figures in your area, visit www.police.uk  and search using your postcode.

For non-emergency issues remember to use 101 or in case of an emergency, 999. Braunstone Town Police Newsletter August 2018

Hello and welcome to the August edition of our monthly update newsletter.  We hope that this will give you a little information about crime and other policing matters within the area.  We are well and truly into what has so far been a very warm and dry summer and we have seen lots of people from the local community out and about, making the most of the weather.  Thankfully we have not seen a significant increase in burglary offences, as we often do in such warm weather, but we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to close accessible windows and doors, locking them where possible.  Please remember to do this when going out or before going to bed at night.

There have, of course, been some burglary offences and we appeal to everyone reading this to consider your home security.  Simple and inexpensive upgrades can be made to access, lighting and locks before spending money on more expensive options such as alarms and CCTV.  Make your house less attractive to a burglar and they will go elsewhere.

We have also seen a small increase in vehicle crime, although we are glad to report that it does seem to have reduced significantly in the last couple of weeks.  Sadly we are still getting plenty of reports of thefts from cars that have not been locked.  This could be down to modern technology where the owner assumes the car automatically locks but in fact it does not or simply forgetfulness on the part of the owner.  Whatever the initial cause, some car owners are leaving cars unlocked and leaving expensive items in their cars.  Even if your car is definitely locked, please do not leave things like laptops, satnavs, wallets, bags or cash in there.  It is frustrating to have to continually repeat this message when such simple precautions can prevent expensive losses.

Crime figures can be found online at: https://www.police.uk/leicestershire/NH19/crime/

We are also about to say farewell to one Sergeant and one of our PCSOs and welcome a new Sergeant.  Sgt 549 Tony Mannion leaves us at the end of July for a new role at force HQ and taking his position is to be Sgt 2985 Alex Goldsmith.  PCSO 6641 Calum Loades is to move to a neighbouring beat area in late August to balance staffing numbers across neighbourhood teams.  We are sorry to see Tony and Calum leave our team and wish them both well in their new roles and we look forward to working with Alex.  We look forward to seeing you at the Braunstone Town Summer Fete at Mossdale Park on 28th July.  Please do come along and say hello!

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter July 2018

Last week PC Stu Clough and PCSO Calum Loades attended a Beavers Group at the Thorpe Astley Community Centre, the children were thrilled to see our Officers who took down one of our Police Vans for the children to have look in whilst also discussing the role of Police Officers and Staff.

We recently received a telephone call from a local bank who was following protocol after an elderly male arrived in their branch trying to withdraw a large sum of money in order to pay some traders who were at his property clearing his garden, the male from Braunstone Town was escorted back to his property by our Officers where 2 males were arrested for Fraud and their vehicle was recovered after being used in crime.

The summer Drink Drive Drug Campaign has been extended by two weeks as the hot weather continues and England remain in the World Cup. Since the campaign started on 1 June 2018, Leicestershire Police has made 66 arrests - nine more than on the same day in June 2017. These current arrests also include sixteen for drug driving, which is five more than last year. A third of the arrests have been between 6am and 6pm. Younger drivers are still getting caught out with 19 of those arrested aged 24 or under. Fourteen of the arrests have been following a road traffic collision. The highest breath test reading has been 142, over four times the drink drive limit.

On June 13th PC Leanne Dedmen-Ert and PCSO Calum Loades attended our Beat Surgery at the Co-Op on Turnbull Drive, although no issues were raised it was a great opportunity to meet some of the residents.

For the week commencing the 18th June Officers from the local beat team attended Millfield Academy to give some assistance to Leicestershire County Council in relation to the experimental parking scheme. Results were good and the officer’s presence seemed to be welcomed. Only 1 advice notice was left and no tickets issued.

Officers will be in attendance at the Summer Fete on the 28th July and we look forward to seeing you all there in support of the community, charities and local businesses.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter May 2018

On April 10th we held a Beat Surgery at Gilly’s Sandwich Bar on Watergate Lane and again on the 11th at the Thorpe Astley Civic Centre, we were glad to see some of the local residents and enjoyed having a chat about the local issues, no concerns were raised.

We have unfortunately seen an increase in Burglaries over the past month, we would appeal to anyone who has any information or who has seen anything suspicious to contact us on 101 or if you’d prefer you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 anonymously. Please remember to keep all your doors and windows locked, prevent easy access to the back and sides of your property, and install a visible alarm system or a camera doorbell and get instant alerts when visitors press your doorbell or trigger the built in motion sensors, you can see, hear and speak to them via your Smartphone. Please give some thought as to where you leave your valuables when you leave the property, are they visible? If they are high in value i.e. small electrical goods or jewellery then consider securing them away in a lockable device.

Thefts from motor vehicles also seem to be continuing and we would urge you all to remove any items of value, small change, dash cams etc from your vehicle and leave your glove box open. Enquiries are ongoing, if you have any information or you’ve been offered dash cams etc then we’d love to hear from you.

Millfield Community School in Braunstone Town have launched a Park and Stride scheme at the school, there have been a number of parking issues outside the school gates and surrounding residential roads leading to this scheme being introduced. The school clear zone trial will last for 6 months from April 9th which involves ‘no waiting’ restrictions being put into place between 8am-9am and 2pm – 4pm, the roads within the zone include Hat Road, Freeboard Road, Woodcote Road, Lubbesthorpe Road and Pits Avenue. For those who park within this vicinity during these times will face a £70 fine.

Our officers will be attending the Spring Fair on the 19th May at the Thorpe Astley Community Centre which as always will be a great event to support your community and meet your local beat team.

Finally we would like to welcome Sgt Ian Tuckwood to the Hinckley and Blaby area who will be taking on the responsibilities of Deputy Commander for the area.

#livesnotknives

by Leicestershire Police

As a National Campaign for Knife Crime continues this week I wanted to thank everyone who has helped promote the prevention messages in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to discourage people carrying knives.

We can see every day in national and local news the presence of knives and the tragic consequences of their use on families, friends and neighbourhoods.

Since October, when I provided an update on the materials and products we were encouraging use of to deter the carriage and use of knives and we have seen the following reach:

Lives not Knives

A Father Story ( https://youtu.be/HkmGt7ek8BA ) viewed 64,608 times

Laurics Final Minutes ( https://youtu.be/jwOYFg2Gdqc )  viewed 23,821 times

Infographic (https://youtu.be/gzeH2Ye8Bw0 ) viewed 7,395 times

Anthony Joshua (https://youtu.be/_xlG4h1O0nw ) viewed 19,587 times

This is great and I know these have also been shown in presentations to many groups throughout the county by our partners and volunteers.

However we are still seeing that it appears acceptable to carry knives, show them on social media posts, post videos on accounts of posing with knives and carrying them around to show to friends.

This means we need to try even harder to make the awareness of the dangers and consequences to as many resident of Leicestershire as possible and make clear that it is not acceptable, and if you carry a knife there is the chance it can be used and someone lose their life.

#livesnotknives is the approach we have consistently used since last year and I ask you to follow the updates, share and promote the work, encouraging our communities and activity groups to start a discussion about knife crime.

Thank you to all the partnerships engaged so far but I ask you to take time to see how you can share some of these awareness videos wider and allow people to be better informed not to carry a knife, and know what to do if someone they know is carrying a knife.

Monday 12 February 2018 is the Home Office’s National Knife Crime week of action, Operation Sceptre. This will be the third such operation that Leicestershire Police have taken part in. As you will see we have a wide range of pre- planned activity across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and for the first time since October 2017, we will have Knife Surrender bins at four stations, Loughborough, Wigston, Spinney Hill and Mansfield House.

In addition to the programme there is a large number of Neighbourhood level Knife crime activities taking place such as educational talks and visits to Habitual Knife Carriers.

We must make people aware of the consequences of carrying knives and I encourage everyone who can start a discussion to do so and utilise any of this material to change the culture around carrying a knife.

Thank you.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter December 2016

Welcome to the December edition of the Braunstone Town newsletter.police christmas

Christmas is almost upon us, a time to celebrate and have fun. For a safe Christmas and to avoid becoming a victim of crime here are some handy tips for the festive period.

Leave it till the last minute to put Christmas presents out under the tree and don't leave them in view of a window or in your car.

When you go out at night, draw the curtains or blinds and leave a light on. You could always put a lamp or radio on a timer switch to make it appear someone is home. Refrain from keeping large amounts of cash at home. Make sure windows and doors are locked and remove keys from sight.

Dispose of packaging carefully by breaking it down before putting it in the bin. Empty boxes left outside can advertise that you have nice new goods inside.

Ensure your home contents insurance adequately covers the additional things that you have in your home over Christmas.

Register your property securely and free of charge on the national property marking database www.immobilise.com Doing this can assist the police in returning your property should it be lost or stolen.

If you know of any elderly or vulnerable persons who will be alone on Christmas Day, why not get in touch with your local beat officers who can put you in touch with a group of volunteers who put on an amazing Christmas dinner and activities for a few hours.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter July 2016

Welcome to the July edition of the Braunstone Town newsletter.

Theft from motor vehicles continues to be the threat for the area of Braunstone Town and Thorpe Astley. Please remember to lock your vehicles at night and keep windows shut. Also, do not leave items on display to include bags, money, sat navs or other electrical devices.
Now that summer has finally arrived, if you are out in the garden or even just popping out for a short while, please remember to keep your doors and windows shut and locked in particular to the front of the house. At night, remember to put away any tools you may have been using in the garden and secure your sheds and garages.
If you are going out for the evening and will be late home during the hours of darkness, try and keep a light on or use a light timer to show that someone is home. If you are going away for longer periods due to holidays, why not let a trusted neighbour know you are going to be away so they can 'check-in' from time to time or to simply remove the pile of post on the floor if on view.
If you require further crime prevention advice, ask one of the beat team who will be happy to help.

Anti-Social Behaviour

Anti-social behavior around Franklin Park in particular the damage to the fencing and walkway at the wildlife pond has been addressed. Through local consultations with members of the public and extra patrols, a handful of individuals have been identified and spoken to. Warning letters have been issued which will hopefully send a message to other individuals that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.
If you witness or are a victim of anti-social behavior, please report it to the police so the matter can be dealt with swiftly.

Community Engagement

Members from the Braunstone Town beat team will be available to address any issues you may have on Saturday 9th July at the shops on Watergate Lane between 10 am and 12:00pm.

On Saturday 30th July, officers will be present at the Braunstone Town Community Fete from 11am until close at 4pm. Braunstone Town Police Newsletter February 2016

Welcome to the February edition of the Braunstone Town newsletter.

In the last month Braunstone Town in particular continues to suffer from domestic burglaries. These have occurred predominately in the early evening or overnight often whilst occupants are away. Entry is gained by smashing a rear ground floor window or patio door. Once inside the property, small items are taken in particular jewellery or electrical items. Did you know that it can take a burglar on average about ten minutes to break in and steal your possessions?

In a recent burglary on Welcombe Avenue the victim had property stolen to include an Ipad and her vehicle! Thankfully due to the vigilance of a member of the public and some detective work by the beat team, the Ipad was found in the street just around the corner and the vehicle was found locked and secure in a pub car park. It doesn't happen very often, but it is satisfying when stolen property is returned to its owner especially the car and in one piece!

The beat is experiencing a spike in theft from motor vehicles. This is due to persons leaving property on show to include satnavs and ipads. Thankfully no cars have been reported stolen as a result of vehicles left running in the frosty mornings. We are promoting awareness through our website and the Braunstone Town Life magazine.

There has also been several reports of damage to motor vehicles belonging to staff working at Audi cars, Narborough Road South. Police are following up several lines of enquiry and the investigation is ongoing at this time.

Similarly, damage has been reported to vehicles parked in the car parks on Hastings Walk, again this is in its infancy and is ongoing.

Anti-Social Behaviour

Anti-social behaviour in and around the area of Henley Crescent and the parks continues to improve on a day to day basis. The beat team continue to spend a lot of time patrolling the area, liaising with the shops and partner agencies which seems to be helping. Unfortunately the anti-social behaviour appears to have moved to near the bollards on Shakespeare Drive. The beat team are aware and work is ongoing at this time.

Community Engagement

Dates for your diary - Members of the beat team will be attending the Sunway Shops, Sunway, Braunstone Town to hold a community engagement event on Thursday 17th March between 10am and 12pm.

Also on Saturday 12th March between 10am and 3pm colleagues from Hinckley Neighbourhood team will be at the Hinckley Library, Lancaster Road, Hinckley LE10 0AT for Living Well with Dementia Day 2016. There will be opportunities to take part in lots of activities throughout the day including a session from Dementia friends between 11am and 1pm. Refreshments will be available along with giveaways. For more information please contact PCSO 6659 Julie Hodgkinson Tel: 101 or Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The beat team continue to attend the BB19 youth bus on Franklin Park on Thursday evenings and Fusion youth club on Friday evenings at Winstanley school to engage with young people using its services and find out what issues they have and to advise them about anti-social behaviour

Good news

There have been no further reported incidents regarding the female knocking on doors asking for charity money. The investigation continues and at this time, no arrests have been made.

Positive arrests have been made following the burglaries in the area and work continues to develop on a day to day basis.

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter January 2016

Welcome to the January edition of the Braunstone Town newsletter.

In the last month the local neighbourhood team has seen that there has been an increase to burglaries to houses in Braunstone Town and Thorpe Astley. These have occurred during late evenings whilst the occupants have been out of the property. I advise residents to utilise timer light switches if you will be out during hours of darkness. Let neighbours know if you will be going away so they are able to keep an eye on your property and report any suspicious activity.

We are also reminding residents that in the frosty mornings to be vigilant when defrosting cars. Never leave keys in the ignition whilst your vehicle is running and unattended. Please do not make yourself an easy target for thieves who can drive away in seconds. Equally, do not leave valuables in full view as these can be tempting too.

Over the last few weeks, several reports have been received from members of the public living in and around the area of Braunstone Close and Narborough Road South concerning a female asking for charity money. At this stage enquiries are ongoing and if anyone has been a victim of crime to contact police.

Anti-Social Behaviour

Since Christmas time, anti-social behaviour in and around the area of Henley Crescent has seen a significant reduction in youth related incidents. Numerous warning letters have been sent out to families concerned and a handful have been issued with anti-social behavioural contracts. Working closely with Blaby District Council and other partner agency's work is ongoing at this stage.

Other low level ASB has been reported on Shakespeare Drive near to the bollards. The beat team are aware and are patrolling the area.

Community Engagement

Members of the local neighbourhood team will be conducting an engagement event on Thursday 18thFebruary at Henley Crescent shops from 5pm until 7pm. This is to give the community and opportunity to meet their local beat team and discuss any issues they may have and hear their views.

The beat team continue to attend the BB19 youth bus on Franklin Park on Thursday evenings and Fusion youth club on Friday evenings at Winstanley school to engage with young people using its services and find out what issues they have and to advise them about anti-social behaviour. A football match was held recently with staff at Winstanley School to encourage closer relations. This was greatly received especially as the police lost!

Braunstone Town Police Newsletter November 2015

Welcome to the November edition of the Braunstone Town newsletter.

In the last month we have had a slight increase in burglaries to the home reported with 5 in the last month. One of the burglaries reported was a distraction burglary where a stranger managed to gain access to a resident's home. I remind residents to be vigilant and if cold callers attend your address don't allow them access and if they are from a registered company ensure you check they have identification.

This month we have seen an increase in thefts from local shops. There has been several reported in the last month. The local beat team is working with the shops to reduce the thefts and we are increasing our visits to local shops to deter thieves.

There have been three reports of attempted break in to garages and sheds in the area of Braunstone Town. I ask residents to ensure that they keep valuable items secured within garages and outbuildings as well as locking the door to deter thieves.

If you see anyone acting suspicious in the area please call in on 101 you may prevent a crime from being committed.

Anti-Social Behaviour

We have seen an increase in criminal damage reported in the last month and we believe these were linked to Halloween and bonfire night as these crimes were recorded over the Halloween weekend.

Community Engagement

Members of the local neighbourhood team have attended the Thorpe Astley community centre Halloween disco it was great to see the children having fun and families enjoying the activities that were ran by the entertainment team at the disco.

We also attended the allotment Halloween celebrations and had the honour of judging the best carved pumpkin. We enjoyed seeing the efforts made by our local residents and allotment users to look as scary as possible.
